Ocean's Echos

Let the past speak through fine art photographs that celebrate the aged beauty of seaside relics and patinated spoons, available as a set for your home.

I see an undeniable beauty in our imperfections. The scars we've accumulated—each one a testament to our strength—have crafted the incredible individuals we are today. Let's honor and celebrate this journey. Age and experience don't diminish our value; they enhance it with profound wisdom and distinct beauty.

I first became fascinated with this concept after my father passed away. I wanted to remember and document my dad’s tools, and I knew that his garage would soon be gone from my life, too.  I didn’t want to lose my memories of being in there with him, but I couldn’t quite capture the essence of that space—it was too cluttered and I was still mourning. So I did what I knew how to do: I brought his tools into the studio and started playing there.
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

What started off as a healing practice became a passion for me. I’m used to photographing food and chefs in restaurants, and while I’d be waiting during photoshoots, I began to focus on the objects they used to do their work, culinary tools like this image of the James Beard Pans.

Whatever it was fascinating to see the texture and wear on these items, and to think about how these tools had been used over and over again, then cleaned and used again and again.

In 2016, I had a successful show that highlighted these photographed culinary objects and sold over 40 images in the 2 months it was mounted.

After that, I began focusing on spoons. Worn, beaten, discarded—I found them everywhere and decided to start using them as the basis of my next idea.

The challenge? Capturing the beauty in decay, impermanence, and imperfection—and pairing that quiet beauty with natural items. I feel like these ideas are also about my aging process.
it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

This Ocean’s Echos series reminds me of the people in my life; of how many of them have had hardships, traumatic events and/or seemingly impossible obstacles to overcome. Yet still, they are still standing, still here, doing their soul’s work every day, and it is that resilience that I honor. Just like I’m doing with these spoons, I’m showcasing that quiet beauty in each piece.

(There are thousands of beat up spoons out there—this art project could go on forever!)

I learned of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi through my dealings with talented chefs and have loved it since the moment they shared it with me. When applied to tools, utensils and other objects, it invites us to find beauty in the imperfections and the natural aging process. It encourages an appreciation for simplicity, authenticity, and the quiet elegance that comes with time-worn, well-loved items. This philosophy fosters a deeper connection to the material world, and a more mindful approach to the objects we use and cherish in our daily lives.
